Norfolk Virginia History

For those of us who have always been fascinated by the history of the Navy, there is no better place to be than Norfolk, Virginia, home to one of the world's most important naval bases.

Norfolk is an urban complex that includes the Port of Norfolk, Norfolk Navy Yard and Naval Air Station Norfolk. Norfolk is one of the largest naval bases in the United States and is located in Virginia, but it is also the city area that also hosts a number of other historical sites, including the Virginia Museum of Natural History. The Elizabeth River Tunnel between Norfolk and Portsmouth was completed in 1952, followed by a second tunnel ten years later. At that time, the Hampton Roads Bridge and the tunnel connecting Norfolk with the nearby town of Hampton were also built. The city limits were then about 2.2 km south of Portsmouth and about 2 km north of Norfolk, with a population of about 3,000.

Norfolk and Virginia Beach Railway began service to the rural community of Seatack in Princess Anne County. The Virginia Railway came in 1907 and the Norfolk, Virginia and Norfolk Railway in 1908. As the populations of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk grew, Norfolk's primacy as the region's largest jurisdiction diminished. Portsmouth and Ches Bayou Suffolk followed suit, while Norfolk abandoned its sticker system. Virginia Beach also abolished the city vignette, but Norfolk did not.

Norfolk and Hampton Roads, however, have been able to attract one of the region's most prominent historians, Dr Charles Ford, who is a history professor at Norfolk State University.

The Berkley town records of 1900 and 1901 list the area that would later become South Norfolk as the site of the city's first fire station and police station. The insurance cards also indicate that the first post office was built on the south side of the main road in the 1930s.

When Norfolk Western and other railways passed through Norfolk County, they promoted development in the region. When Norfolk shipped coal from West Virginia by train to be shipped elsewhere, prosperity declined.

In these circumstances, Norfolk County and South Norfolk officials found it difficult to plan for the future. The 19th century proved to be one of the most difficult periods in the county's history in terms of economic development.
