The football season has begun at Savannah State University and the Tigers held a closed team meeting Wednesday morning. Coach Deion Sanders and Jackson State have until December 1, the day before the early signing deadline for college football begins. American football is about competing and winning at every school, but the closed contests are a chance to finally get back on track.

Founded in 1935, Norfolk State University was founded to give the region's youth the opportunity to express their hopes and aspirations. When the college was granted university status by the Virginia General Assembly in 1979, it changed its name to Norfolk State College and later to Norwich University in 2001. Norfolk State, Norfolk was awarded university status in 1979 and became a fully independent Virginia and the first public university in the United States. Norwich State University was founded in 1934 to give young people in the region the opportunity to express their hope and desire.

Norfolk State University is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a special celebration on Saturday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Norfolk State Center for the Arts.

The school is located in the Norfolk - Hampton Roads area and is a highlight of the Norfolk education system. With a total of 98,812 students enrolled, it is one of the largest public colleges and universities in Virginia, with more than 1,000 students. The nearest college is second only to Norfolk with a population of 242,803. The school is located in a city (see map below) and is the second largest in terms of proximity to the city's public schools.

Norfolk State University (NSU) is a public school for 4- and over-age students in Norfolk, VA. With over 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students focused on the Norfolk-Hampton Roads area of Virginia and the Virginia Commonwealth University system, Norfolk State University offers a broad range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and business with a focus on research and innovation. Through its partnership with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Virginia Tech, NS U offers opportunities to access globally competitive education in a competitive environment.

The stadium opened in 1997 and is located in Norfolk, Virginia, in the Hampton Roads area and hosts football, basketball, baseball, football, volleyball and other sports for men and women. Morgan State University was founded in 1890 and is an independent, non-denominational public university with more than 1,000 undergraduate and doctoral students in Baltimore, Maryland.

To top it all off, Norfolk State defeated Hampton University 15-7 in the Battle of the Bay. The main plus here is the enormous energy that the band Spartan Legion brings to the stadium. This band delights players and fans at every football game we play and performs in front of thousands of fans at every home game in Norfolk, Virginia and throughout the state of Virginia. The Spartans Legion also complete their appearance at the end of each game with a special performance by their band.

Norfolk State may be best known for its basketball upset against second-seeded Missouri in the NCAA tournament a few years ago, but college fans and officials say any visit to Norfolk State football stadium is an experience.
